** Many people ask, "Is the Honu ukulele made in Hawaii?" The current line of Big Island Ukuleles is not made in Hawaii. The Koa wood is harvested, cut, and milled on the Big Island of Hawaii by our parent company and sent overseas to be manufactured into a high quality instrument.
Where is it made, you might ask... As suppliers of koa to ukulele makers around the world, we have a special insight to each one's skill level.
We've found a special factory in Vietnam to work with to provide the attention-to-detail and excellent sound that makes this a high-quality instrument that rivals the best ukulele makers in the world. We hope you will appreciate the value of this high-quality instrument!

The Island of Hawaii is also known as “The Big Island” because it is the largest of the Hawaiian Island chain. The owner of the company, having grown up on the Big Island, wishes to share with you the music and Aloha of Hawaii.

Big Island Series
Big Island Series solid Koa, Mango and Khaya Mahogany are made with the same quality construction as the Honu series but with a few slight differences.
They are made with a more traditional three-point head and tie-style bridge. Concert and Tenor models have a slightly bigger body depth and width. The Koa tortoise series uses a combination wood rope and faux tortoise (made in Japan) binding. The Mango series uses Koa binding and extra-large rosette.

Pickup
FISHMAN brand pickups made in the USA are used as our standard pickup in the various models. The Fishman Active Matrix Infinity Pickup can be special ordered as an upgrade for any ukulele. This is the same pickup used on the Kamaka “Jake Shimabukuro” signature model. Please ask your local dealer for availability and pricing.
Finish
The Big Island Ukulele Company uses a multiple-coat glossy finish. A glossy finish is the most difficult to make and still achieve an excellent sound. Our ukuleles are made with the utmost care to provide a wonderful looking instrument, but most important, an excellent sounding ukulele! A matte or satin finish is sometimes available- please inquire with your dealer.
